Opening Prayers

Dual Prayer

Silently

Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: Amen.
Hail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners; Now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Opening Versicles

Audibly

V. O God, * make speed to save me.
R. O Lord, * make haste to help me.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost:
As it was in the beginning, † is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

Alleluia.

Psalter

Antiphon I: O eternal Lord,

Psalm 139:1-12

Domine, probasti

O LORD, thou hast searched me out and known me * thou knowest my down-sitting and mine up-rising, thou understandest my thoughts long before.
2 Thou art about my path, and about my bed * and spiest out all my ways.
3 For lo, there is not a word in my tongue * but thou, O Lord, knowest it altogether.
4 Thou hast fashioned me behind and before * and laid thine hand upon me.
5 Such knowledge is too wonderful and excellent for me * I cannot attain unto it.
6 Whither shall I go then from thy Spirit * or whither shall I go then from thy presence?
7 If I climb up into heaven, thou art there * if I go down to hell, thou art there also.
8 If I take the wings of the morning * and remain in the uttermost parts of the sea;
9 Even there also shall thy hand lead me * and thy right hand shall hold me.
10 If I say, Peradventure the darkness shall cover me * then shall my night be turned to day.
11 Yea, the darkness is no darkness with thee, but the night is as clear as the day * the darkness and light to thee are both alike.
12 For my reins are thine * thou hast covered me in my mother's womb.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost:
As it was in the beginning, † is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

Antiphon I: O eternal Lord, † thou hast searched me out, * and known me.

Antiphon II: Marvellous

Psalm 139:13-24

I will give thanks unto thee, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made * marvellous are thy works, and that my soul knoweth right well.
14 My bones are not hid from thee * though I be made secretly, and fashioned beneath in the earth.
15 Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect * and in thy book were all my members written;
16 Which day by day were fashioned * when as yet there was none of them.
17 How dear are thy counsels unto me, O God * O how great is the sum of them!
18 If I tell them, they are more in number than the sand * when I wake up I am present with thee.
19 Wilt thou not slay the wicked, O God * depart from me, ye blood-thirsty men.
20 For they speak unrighteously against thee * and thine enemies take thy Name in vain.
21 Do not I hate them, O Lord, that hate thee * and am not I grieved with those that rise up against thee?
22 Yea, I hate them right sore * even as though they were mine enemies.
23 Try me, O God, and seek the ground of my heart * prove me, and examine my thoughts.
24 Look well if there be any way of wickedness in me * and lead me in the way everlasting.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost:
As it was in the beginning, † is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

Antiphon II: Marvellous † are thy works, O Lord, * and that my soul knoweth right well.

Antiphon III: Let not the ungodly

Psalm 140:1-13

Eripe me, Domine

DELIVER me, O Lord, from the evil man * and preserve me from the wicked man.
2 Who imagine mischief in their hearts * and stir up strife all the day long.
3 They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent * adders' poison is under their lips.
4 Keep me, O Lord, from the hands of the ungodly * preserve me from the wicked men, who are purposed to overthrow my goings.
5 The proud have laid a snare for me, and spread a net abroad with cords * yea, and set traps in my way.
6 I said unto the Lord, Thou art my God * hear the voice of my prayers, O Lord.
7 O Lord God, thou strength of my health * thou hast covered my head in the day of battle.
8 Let not the ungodly have his desire, O Lord * let not his mischievous imagination prosper, lest they be too proud.
9 Let the mischief of their own lips fall upon the head of them * that compass me about.
10 Let hot burning coals fall upon them * let them be cast into the fire and into the pit, that they never rise up again.
11 A man full of words shall not prosper upon the earth * evil shall hunt the wicked person to overthrow him.
12 Sure I am that the Lord will avenge the poor * and maintain the cause of the helpless.
13 The righteous also shall give thanks unto thy Name * and the just shall continue in thy sight.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost:
As it was in the beginning, † is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

Antiphon III: Let not the ungodly † have his desire, * O Lord God, thou strength of my health.

Antiphon IV: O covenanting Lord,

Psalm 141:1-11

Domine, clamavi

LORD, I call upon thee, haste thee unto me * and consider my voice when I cry unto thee.
2 Let my prayer be set forth in thy sight as the incense * and let the lifting up of my hands be an evening sacrifice.
3 Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth * and keep the door of my lips.
4 O let not mine heart be inclined to any evil thing * let me not be occupied in ungodly works with the men that work wickedness, lest I eat of such things as please them.
5 Let the righteous rather smite me friendly * and reprove me.
6 But let not their precious balms break my head * yea, I will pray yet against their wickedness.
7 Let their judges be overthrown in stony places * that they may hear my words, for they are sweet.
8 Our bones lie scattered before the pit * like as when one breaketh and heweth wood upon the earth.
9 But mine eyes look unto thee, O Lord God * in thee is my trust, O cast not out my soul.
10 Keep me from the snare that they have laid for me * and from the traps of the wicked doers.
11 Let the ungodly fall into their own nets together * and let me ever escape them.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost:
As it was in the beginning, † is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

Antiphon IV: O covenanting Lord, † I call upon thee, * haste thee unto me.

Antiphon V: Bring my soul

Psalm 142:1-9

Voce mea ad Dominum

I CRIED unto the Lord with my voice * yea, even unto the Lord did I make my supplication.
2 I poured out my complaints before him * and shewed him of my trouble.
3 When my spirit was in heaviness thou knewest my path * in the way wherein I walked have they privily laid a snare for me.
4 I looked also upon my right hand * and saw there was no man that would know me.
5 I had no place to flee unto * and no man cared for my soul.
6 I cried unto thee, O Lord, and said * Thou art my hope, and my portion in the land of the living.
7 Consider my complaint * for I am brought very low.
8 O deliver me from my persecutors * for they are too strong for me.
9 Bring my soul out of prison, that I may give thanks unto thy Name * which thing if thou wilt grant me, then shall the righteous resort unto my company.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost:
As it was in the beginning, † is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

Antiphon V: Bring my soul † out of prison, O Lord, * that I may give thanks unto thy Name.

Ezekiel 18:1-32

The word of the LORD came unto me again, saying,
2 What mean ye, that ye use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge?
3 As I live, saith the Lord GOD, ye shall not have occasion any more to use this proverb in Israel.
4 Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.
5 But if a man be just, and do that which is lawful and right,
6 And hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, neither hath defiled his neighbour's wife, neither hath come near to a menstruous woman,
7 And hath not oppressed any, but hath restored to the debtor his pledge, hath spoiled none by violence, hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment;
8 He that hath not given forth upon usury, neither hath taken any increase, that hath withdrawn his hand from iniquity, hath executed true judgment between man and man,
9 Hath walked in my statutes, and hath kept my judgments, to deal truly; he is just, he shall surely live, saith the Lord GOD.
10 If he beget a son that is a robber, a shedder of blood, and that doeth the like to any one of these things,
11 And that doeth not any of those duties, but even hath eaten upon the mountains, and defiled his neighbour's wife,
12 Hath oppressed the poor and needy, hath spoiled by violence, hath not restored the pledge, and hath lifted up his eyes to the idols, hath committed abomination,
13 Hath given forth upon usury, and hath taken increase: shall he then live? he shall not live: he hath done all these abominations; he shall surely die; his blood shall be upon him.
14 Now, lo, if he beget a son, that seeth all his father's sins which he hath done, and considereth, and doeth not such like,
15 That hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, hath not defiled his neighbour's wife,
16 Neither hath oppressed any, hath not withholden the pledge, neither hath spoiled by violence, but hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment,
17 That hath taken off his hand from the poor, that hath not received usury nor increase, hath executed my judgments, hath walked in my statutes; he shall not die for the iniquity of his father, he shall surely live.
18 As for his father, because he cruelly oppressed, spoiled his brother by violence, and did that which is not good among his people, lo, even he shall die in his iniquity.
19 Yet say ye, Why? doth not the son bear the iniquity of the father? When the son hath done that which is lawful and right, and hath kept all my statutes, and hath done them, he shall surely live.
20 The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.
21 But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die.
22 All his transgressions that he hath committed, they shall not be mentioned unto him: in his righteousness that he hath done he shall live.
23 Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? saith the Lord GOD: and not that he should return from his ways, and live?
24 But when the righteous turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and doeth according to all the abominations that the wicked man doeth, shall he live? All his righteousness that he hath done shall not be mentioned: in his trespass that he hath trespassed, and in his sin that he hath sinned, in them shall he die.
25 Yet ye say, The way of the Lord is not equal. Hear now, O house of Israel; Is not my way equal? are not your ways unequal?
26 When a righteous man turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and dieth in them; for his iniquity that he hath done shall he die.
27 Again, when the wicked man turneth away from his wickedness that he hath committed, and doeth that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive.
28 Because he considereth, and turneth away from all his transgressions that he hath committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die.
29 Yet saith the house of Israel, The way of the Lord is not equal. O house of Israel, are not my ways equal? are not your ways unequal?
30 Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, saith the Lord GOD. Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin.
31 Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel?
32 For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord GOD: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye.

Ezekiel 19:1-14

Moreover take thou up a lamentation for the princes of Israel,
2 And say, What is thy mother? A lioness: she lay down among lions, she nourished her whelps among young lions.
3 And she brought up one of her whelps: it became a young lion, and it learned to catch the prey; it devoured men.
4 The nations also heard of him; he was taken in their pit, and they brought him with chains unto the land of Egypt.
5 Now when she saw that she had waited, and her hope was lost, then she took another of her whelps, and made him a young lion.
6 And he went up and down among the lions, he became a young lion, and learned to catch the prey, and devoured men.
7 And he knew their desolate palaces, and he laid waste their cities; and the land was desolate, and the fulness thereof, by the noise of his roaring.
8 Then the nations set against him on every side from the provinces, and spread their net over him: he was taken in their pit.
9 And they put him in ward in chains, and brought him to the king of Babylon: they brought him into holds, that his voice should no more be heard upon the mountains of Israel.
10 Thy mother is like a vine in thy blood, planted by the waters: she was fruitful and full of branches by reason of many waters.
11 And she had strong rods for the sceptres of them that bare rule, and her stature was exalted among the thick branches, and she appeared in her height with the multitude of her branches.
12 But she was plucked up in fury, she was cast down to the ground, and the east wind dried up her fruit: her strong rods were broken and withered; the fire consumed them.
13 And now she is planted in the wilderness, in a dry and thirsty ground.
14 And fire is gone out of a rod of her branches, which hath devoured her fruit, so that she hath no strong rod to be a sceptre to rule. This is a lamentation, and shall be for a lamentation.

V. This is the Word of the Lord.
R. Thanks be to God.

Optional: New Testament Reading

John 15:1-27

I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.
2 Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.
3 Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.
4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.
5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
6 If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.
7 If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
8 Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.
9 As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.
10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.
11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.
12 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.
13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.
15 Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.
16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.
17 These things I command you, that ye love one another.
18 If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.
19 If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.
20 Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.
21 But all these things will they do unto you for my name's sake, because they know not him that sent me.
22 If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin: but now they have no cloke for their sin.
23 He that hateth me hateth my Father also.
24 If I had not done among them the works which none other man did, they had not had sin: but now have they both seen and hated both me and my Father.
25 But this cometh to pass, that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause.
26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:
27 And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.

V. This is the Word of the Lord.
R. Thanks be to God.

Chapter

2 Corinthians 1:3

Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort;

Hymn

Plasmator hominis, Deus.

Maker of men, from heaven, thy throne,
Who orderest all things, God alone;
By whose decree the teeming earth
To reptile and to beast gave birth:

The mighty forms that fill the land,
Instinct with life at thy command,
Are given subdued to human-kind
For service in their rank assigned:

Therefore subdue in us today
Fierce passions which would else have sway,
Or mingle with the heart's intent,
And with our actions thus be blent.

In heaven thine endless joys bestow,
But grant thy gifts of grace below;
From chains of strife our souls release,
Bind fast the gentle bands of peace.

All laud to God the Father be;
All praise, eternal Son, to thee;
All glory, as is ever meet,
To God the Holy Paraclete. Amen.

V. Lord, let my prayer be set forth.
R. In thy sight as the incense.

Antiphon IV: He hath put down the mighty,

Luke 1:46-55

And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,
47 And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
48 For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
49 For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.
50 And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.
51 He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
52 He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree.
53 He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.
54 He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy;
55 As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost:
As it was in the beginning, † is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

Antiphon IV: He hath put down the mighty, † who persecute the holy; * and hath exalted the humble, who put their trust in Christ.

O God, the Creator and Preserver of all mankind, we humbly beseech thee for all sorts and conditions of men: that thou wouldest be pleased to make thy ways known unto them, thy saving health unto all nations. More especially, we pray for the good estate of the Catholick Church; that it may be so guided and governed by thy good Spirit, that all who profess and call themselves Christians may be led into the way of truth, and hold the faith in unity of spirit, in the bond of peace, and in righteousness of life. Finally, we commend to thy fatherly goodness all those, who are any ways afflicted, or distressed, in mind, body, or estate; [*especially those for whom our prayers are desired;] that it may please thee to comfort and relieve them, according to their several necessities, giving them patience under their sufferings, and a happy issue out of all their afflictions. And this we beg for Jesus Christ his sake. Amen.

A General Thanksgiving.

Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we thine unworthy servants do give thee most humble and hearty thanks for all thy goodness and loving-kindness to us, and to all men; [*particularly to those who desire now to offer up their praises and thanksgivings for thy late mercies vouchsafed unto them.] We bless thee for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all, for thine inestimable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we beseech thee, give us that due sense of all thy mercies, that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful, and that we shew forth thy praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives; by giving up ourselves to thy service, and by walking before thee in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom with thee and the Holy Ghost be all honour and glory, world without end.
