Opening Prayers

V. Pray, Lord, give me thy blessing.

Benediction. May the Lord almighty grant us a night of quietude, and perfection at the end of all our days.

R. Amen.

Brief Lesson - 1 Peter 5:8-9

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.

V. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R. Thanks be to God.

V. Our help is in the Name of the Lord.
R. Who hath made heaven and earth

Silently

Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: Amen.

Audibly

Confiteor

I confess to Almighty God, to Blessed Mary Ever-Virgin, to blessed Michael the Archangel, to blessed John the Baptist, * to the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, and to all the Saints, * that I have sinned exceedingly in thought, word, and deed, through my fault, through my own fault, through my own most grievous fault. * Therefore, I beg Blessed Mary Ever-Virgin, blessed Michael the Archangel, blessed John the Baptist, * the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, and all the Saints, * to pray to the Lord our God for me.
Almighty and merciful Lord grant us pardon, absolution, and remission of our sins. Amen

V. Turn us, then, O God our Saviour.
R. And let thine anger cease from us.

Opening Versicles

Audibly

V. O God, * make speed to save me.
R. O Lord, * make haste to help me.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost:
As it was in the beginning, † is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

To thee, O Lord, all honour be, King of endless majesty.

Psalter

Antiphon: Thou shalt keep us,

Psalm 12:1-9

Salvum me fac

HELP me, Lord, for there is not one godly man left * for the faithful are minished from among the children of men.
2 They talk of vanity every one with his neighbour * they do but flatter with their lips, and dissemble in their double heart.
3 The Lord shall root out all deceitful lips * and the tongue that speaketh proud things;
4 Which have said, With our tongue will we prevail * we are they that ought to speak, who is lord over us?
5 Now for the comfortless trouble's sake of the needy * and because of the deep sighing of the poor,
6 I will up, saith the Lord * and will help every one from him that swelleth against him, and will set him at rest.
7 The words of the Lord are pure words * even as the silver, which from the earth is tried, and purified seven times in the fire.
8 Thou shalt keep them, O Lord * thou shalt preserve him from this generation for ever.
9 The ungodly walk on every side * when they are exalted, the children of men are put to rebuke.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost:
As it was in the beginning, † is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

Psalm 13:1-7

Usque quo, Domine?

HOW long wilt thou forget me, O Lord, for ever * how long wilt thou hide thy face from me?
2 How long shall I seek counsel in my soul, and
3 be so vexed in my heart * how long shall mine enemies triumph over me?
4 Consider, and hear me, O Lord my God * lighten mine eyes, that I sleep not in death.
5 Lest mine enemy say, I have prevailed against him * for if I be cast down, they that trouble me will rejoice at it.
6 But my trust is in thy mercy * and my heart is joyful in thy salvation.
7 I will sing of the Lord, because he hath dealt so lovingly with me * yea, I will praise the Name of the Lord most Highest.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost:
As it was in the beginning, † is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

Psalm 16:1-12

Conserva me, Domine

PRESERVE me, O God * for in thee have I put my trust.
2 O my soul, thou hast said unto the Lord * Thou art my God, my goods are nothing unto thee.
3 All my delight is upon the saints, that are in the earth * and upon such as excel in virtue.
4 But they that run after another god * shall have great trouble.
5 Their drink-offerings of blood will I not offer * neither make mention of their names within my lips.
6 The Lord himself is the portion of mine inheritance, and of my cup * thou shalt maintain my lot.
7 The lot is fallen unto me in a fair ground * yea, I have a goodly heritage.
8 I will thank the Lord for giving me warning * my reins also chasten me in the night-season.
9 I have set God always before me * for he is on my right hand, therefore I shall not fall.
10 Wherefore my heart was glad, and my glory rejoiced * my flesh also shall rest in hope.
11 For why? thou shalt not leave my soul in hell * neither shalt thou suffer thy Holy One to see corruption.
12 Thou shalt shew me the path of life; in thy presence is the fulness of joy * and at thy right hand there is pleasure for evermore.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost:
As it was in the beginning, † is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

Antiphon: Thou shalt keep us, † O Lord, * thou shalt preserve us for ever.

Hymn

Te lucis ante terminum.

To thee before the close of day,
Creator of the world, we pray,
That with thy wonted favour, thou
Wouldst be our Guard and Keeper now.

From all ill dreams defend our eyes,
From nightly fears and fantasies:
Tread under foot our ghostly foe,
That no pollution we may know.

O Father, that we ask be done
Through Jesus Christ, thine only Son,
Who, with the Holy Ghost and thee,
Shall live and reign eternally. Amen.
